How do people workout on vacation or even bring a healthy lunch to work everyday? Some things just seem impossible. But to others, theses same things might not be thought about at all. That is because a habit has been built until it becomes second nature. Let’s dig into building habits and how to start from square one.
In the area of health, we often think that we can go from doing nothing, to doing something everyday of the week. Sadly, that is just not likely to happen or be maintained, long term, because a habit has not been established to stand the test of time. As time goes on, building a habit allows one to work through the kinks in different seasons of life. These ever changing seasons allow one to figure out how to build a habit, in baby step fashion, but also in a way that is maintainable.
Starting small, is the first step, but often the hardest place to start. Our society likes things now, so waiting is not instinctive. God teaches us to “Be Still” so that we can hear His voice and to “Wait upon the Lord.” so that we confirm we are doing His will. As one is still, we slow down which allows one to calm the noise and hear the voice of the Lord but also allows patience to set in as we wait on the Lord’s guidance for the steps ahead. When building a habit, if we allow the Lord the space to guide through prayer and pointing our thoughts to Him, He will be able to show us His thoughts while building a habit as well as the next step ahead. But this only happens if we wait on Him! The more one spends time in prayer, the less time there is for relying on one’s own strength! Let God lead by casting your burdens on Him.
As one habit is built and being regularly maintained, the next baby step can then be approached. One can build upon the habit just created by increasing the current habit a tiny bit more. Then, through waiting on the Lord, asking for His guidance, and taking the next step, one will continue to build maintainable habits that equate to a a new lifestyle. This is where one knows a true habit has been formed! Look back over the last 4 years and see what you are still doing that you did back then. Those are the habits you have formed. What will the next four years have to say about the habits you start building, today? I can’t wait to see where the Lord leads you in the journey ahead! Check out the “Health Habits Log” to help you begin the steps to a healthier lifestyle, one habit at a time! Enjoy the ride.
